Projects - The Pond

The Pond

The pond is the focal feature of the water garden. The centre-piece where all the main activity is focused. Beautifully sculpted waterlilies rest amongst verdant waterlily pads, goldfish laze in the noon-day sun and a dragonfly heads for the rushes at the waterside to deposit its eggs. A wonderful peaceful place where beautiful plants prosper and wildlife flourishes - a whole natural eco-system.

Moisture-loving plants can play an important role in dressing the periphery of the pond.
While a pond can be self-contained, it generally functions more successfully when accompanied by a bog garden. Here moisture-loving plants not only dress the pond periphery, but also provide opportunities for aquatic fauna to prosper, and the gardener to grow plants that would be difficult elsewhere.
When space is limited, or where a traditional pond is either inappropriate or too large, then container water features can be introduced. The most popular of these is the converted half-barrel or tub, complete with pygmy waterlily and dwarf rushes, but sinks, troughs and other containers can be adapted and utilised to great effect.

A suitable pond profile is necessary if the plants and fish are all to prosper.
In creating a pond there are many aspects to take into consideration, not least of all siting, aspect and safety. This latter is very important and addressed elsewhere. The siting of a pond is crucial to its success. It cannot be introduced to a garden without due consideration of all the practical and aesthetic aspects. Nor can plants be expected to prosper unless the pond profile is suitable.
The materials that a pond is constructed from requires careful choice. They must be able to fulfil all the requirements placed upon them. When mistakes are made with the construction of a pond they are often difficult, and always expensive to correct.
