The International Waterlily Directory
| The International Waterlily Directory has grown out of a series of directories produced for a number of companion regional water gardening websites. Originally it was intended to keep the waterlily directories for each region separate, but as time passed it became obvious that there was going to be a considerable amount of duplication, and that some really first-class cultivars from one region were never going to be known about in other parts of the world. That would be a tragedy for we all should be aware of what is available from the hand of the breeder.
The International Waterlily Directory includes cultivars from around the world.
To find the most popular cultivars for your region, visit the Plant Profiles section.
The drawback to doing this, is that the newcomer to water gardening then becomes overwhelmed by the sheer diversity of waterlilies available in the water gardening world, some of which may not be at the local aquatic or garden centre, or indeed have found their way to a particular region. To overcome this, the most popular cultivars for a region are mentioned in each of the profiles of waterlilies in the profile sections of the websites. Each profile describes a waterlily group according to their basic cultivation and the most popular local kinds.
| The International Waterlily Directory is a tool and reference for gardeners. It is not a botanical document. It is a ready-reference guide for the horticulturist and landscaper. The images concentrate solely on the flowers, and the descriptions include any specific foliage characteristic on fragrance, as well as depth of water most suitable. It is hoped that as far as possible that the portrait of each is representative of the shape and colour of the flower, although growing conditions and photographic quality can cause variation.
The images concentrate on the flowers, but other characteristics are described.
| However, it is a useful starting point and ready-reference for the gardener, despite such short-comings. As with any directory of this kind it is never complete. Indeed this one is at its very beginning.
This project is continuous, for new cultivars are being continually produced.
New waterlilies are continually being produced, and such a venture depends upon the goodwill of those working in institutions and the horticultural industry, as well as enthusiastic hobbyists to permit their photographs to be included here. We also have to learn about the individual cultivars and to make sure that before we include them, they are accurately described and portrayed. We welcome additions from colleagues and friends who can help us to make this a unique practical and educational resource.
We acknowledge those who have already helped us with permission to use their photographs, especially companies such as Hazorea Aquatics, Israel, Merebrook Aquatics, United Kingdom, Wallis Creek Water Garden, Australia, and leading experts, including Dr. Barre Hellquist, United States and Andre Leu, Australia. A full acknowledgement section is in preparation.
