The Pond Filter Parade
There are a number of different systems of filtering water in the water garden, from complete pond, to simple pre-pump filtration. All have varied purposes and are used according to prevailing circumstances. The role of The Pond Filter Parade is to provide an over-view of the methods and products that are available to water gardeners. It should be made clear that the intention is to remain within the remit of the planted garden pond or decorative plain water feature, and not to extend into the complexities of the specialist fish or koi pond. For such information a pond filtration specialist should be consulted.

Pre-pump Filters
These attach directly to the pump. They are much larger than the standard filter that is an integral part of the pump system and are very easy to clean as they slide on and off. It is important when cleaning such filters that only pond water is used. Water from the tap causes their rapid deterioration. These are not intended to be filters that will clean up a pond, rather are they intended to capture particles of debris in the water that may damage the pump impeller. However, they do have some small effect upon clarifying the water.

In-pond Filters
These are generally small filters which are connected directly to the input of the pump or close to it. The water from the outlet of the pump can then feed either a fountain or waterfall. They are mostly used in small ponds. As they operate within the pond they are a little more awkward to clean, having to be periodically removed completely.

Out-of-pond filters (Pressurized)
This kind of filter discharges the water under pressure, making it possible to use the outflow to feed a waterfall header pool, although this should not be more than 1m above pond level. The filter can be easily disguised by vegetation or hard landscaping. Some are capable of operating buried in the soil next to the pond.

Out-of-pond Filters (Gravity)
These filters operate by gravity and therefore when used in conjunction with a waterfall or stream the filter must be situated above the input point of the water feature. In order that such a filter might work effectively water must be pumped up to it with a suitable pump. Gravity filters are for above ground use only and are generally positioned next to the pond.
