Bridges and Causeways
Although bridges and causeways are intended to transport visitors across the water, they are often also used as focal points or important decorative garden elements. Indeed bridges are often positioned before a stream or pond is constructed, in order that the garden scene is properly set and focused. The excavations are then made with the structure’s position clearly defined. Causeways provide a great opportunity to enjoy the plants from a different angle and to move amongst them.

Water Garden Ornaments and Sculptures
While it is true that any garden ornament or sculpture can be positioned beside or in the pond, there are traditions and conventions that make certain subjects and interpretations more relevant than others. There are a wide array of commercial mass-produced garden ornaments available that are of excellent quality, although the more discerning gardener will doubtless require something unique. The presentation of both commercial and individual examples should provide inspiration for everyone.

Islands
Islands are not for every pond or water feature, but they do fill an important role in many water gardens, especially where there is a wildlife interest. Waterfowl and other aquatic wildlife find an island a safe haven from predators. Islands can take a number of forms, from traditional and natural soil islands in naturally occurring ponds to artificially constructed wet or dry islands in the lined or pre-formed pond. Raft islands also have an important practical role to play, and oriental islands a spiritual dimension.

Pond Edges
It is the point at which the pond meets dry land that can often determine the visual success or otherwise of the water garden feature. There are so many excellent ponds around that have been totally ruined by an ill-conceived choice of edging. Not only must it be practical, but also functional, and most important of all, safe for all who venture upon it.
