| The Garden Plants Encyclopedia is an international project, which aims to provide accurate botanical and practical horticultural information about the rich diversity of plants that are available to gardeners around the world. It is divided into convenient horticultural sections and breaks these down into manageable groups that are easy for the gardener to access and understand.

As the Garden Plants Encyclopedia is an international enterprise it is written in standard English and uses the metric system of measurements, the most convenient medium for direct translation into other languages. Although it is universal in concept, it is appreciated that not all plants will be viewed in the same way by all gardening communities. Some plants that are prohibited in one country as potentially invasive species will be highly regarded in another as a plant of garden merit. As far as possible botanical accuracy pertains, although a minimum of necessary scientific terms are used to enable the home gardener to have a ready understanding of a plant’s description.

However, botanical accuracy is compromised a little over plant naming, for those plant names that are currently widely used in the horticultural trade are continued with, even when botanists have good reason to make a change. They are recognised though, being cited as synonyms, along with other important previous names. The Garden Plants Encyclopedia is a practical tool for gardeners and the intention is to make the sourcing of information as simple as possible.
