Step by Step Pond Construction

Edging a Pond with Pavers

Providing an edging using pavers is amongst the simplest and tidiest ways of finishing off a formal liner pond, although with slight adaptation, the technique can also be used with a pre-formed pond. It is important to plan the edging before construction, so that it can be finished with an even number of tiles, avoiding any necessity for cutting them to fit.

Lay a generous and even bed of mortar close to the edge of the pond for securing the paving. Avoid getting mortar into the pond.

Lay the pavers on the mortar bed with a slight overhang. This neatens the edge. Make sure that they are all firmly bedded and level.

The second row of pavers can be used to secure the edge of the liner in position. Push them tightly up to the first row, also bedding them on mortar.

Cut off any surplus liner and firm the second row of pavers securely on the mortar bed. Make sure that they are level and aligned neatly with one another.

Brush a dry mortar mix into the joints between the pavers taking care not to let any drop into the pond. Water gently from a watering can with a fine rose to ensure that the mortar will set properly.
When the edge has been completed, wash off any mortar splashes. Tie the water feature to the garden landscape by using cobbles or laying turf up to the paver edging.
